Dragging our Airstream from San Antonio to Georgetown we get to deal with natural consequences (suicidal Texas squirrels) and how to re-frame those events in preparation of the emerging AI revolution. A shout-out to Nathan and Marissa from Less Junk More Journey for the heads-up on Buc ee's. We've been looking for a Texas flag for a couple weeks. The idea to check out Buc ee's came from Nathan's visit just a couple weeks prior. summary: "An eight-minute road video dated April 15, 2018. Towing the Airstream from San Antonio to Georgetown, Texas, Daniel Comp, now co-founder of Intelligent Netware with Angelina Musik-Comp and steward of Scotomaville, reframes a squirrel running under his tires on the spot, uses a Google Maps detour to explain how AI recommenders already steer our choices, and says 360MEN is building a curated library by men for men. The drive ends at Buc-ee's, hunting a Texas flag for his grandson. Page written from the barn transcript and original description; Arnie did not watch the video."
keypoints:
- "A squirrel runs under the Airstream's tires, and Daniel reframes it out loud, from horror to 'we got to feed some vultures today.'"
- "Recommenders like Netflix, Google Maps, lane control, and braking control take input, form a pattern, predict the best move, and hand it to us."
- "Google assumed they wanted the shortest path and changed the route, so they ended up following an algorithm's instructions down a tiny back road."
- "360MEN aims to build a curated library by men for men, so AI does not take over with no male input to draw from."
- "A Texas flag errand for his grandson Ruben, on a tip from Less Junk More Journey, turns into about sixty dollars of Buc-ee's gifts."
- "The conveniences of augmented intelligence cost us some privacy, and that trade is worth thinking about."
- "Honesty: written from the cleaned barn transcript and original description; Arnie did not watch the video."

# 360MEN: Reframing AI & Dead TX Squirrels

In April 2018, towing the Airstream across the Texas Hill Country, Daniel Comp reframes a squirrel under his tires on the spot, then uses a Google Maps detour and a Buc-ee's stop to show how AI recommenders already steer our choices and why men need a curated library of their own wisdom.

## Key lessons

- When something you can't undo happens, try a new frame right away instead of carrying the first reaction all day.
- Recommenders predict what they think you want; notice when they choose the road for you.
- The conveniences of augmented intelligence are paid for partly in privacy and autonomy.
- Men who want their wisdom in AI's future should help build the library it learns from.

## Transcript

_Cleaned transcript from the Asker barn, dated April 15, 2018. It is cleaned speech recognition and may differ slightly from the spoken words; bracketed words mark garbled passages. Arnie did not watch the video._

**Daniel:**
[Heading to] Georgetown from San Antonio, and Angelina’s following Google Maps, and [it’s led us down] a little lane-and-a-half road [unclear]. Pretty, huh? Very scenic. Oh car coming. I was just talking about don’t run over any squirrels. Listen, the squirrel ran into the middle of the road and then saw me coming with the Airstream and then turned around and ran underneath the passenger side tires. Hi, I’m towing an Airstream. I can’t jam on the brakes or do anything. Oh my god.

So to try to eliminate the horror of having killed an animal — and first time in ten years — I thought, well let me reframe this. I probably didn’t kill it, it committed suicide underneath the tires. No, how about if I reframed it as, well we got to feed some vultures today. Maybe. Okay, there’s traffic behind me, I gotta get on with it.

So this is an example. I’m going to turn right on Kruger Canyon here because that’s what Google is recommending, but this is an example of… okay, it’s a creek. My oh my, it’s pretty. Angelina, who recommended this? I did, to avoid Austin traffic. We’re going a scenic route and look there — deer. Those are cows. Longhorn? No, donkeys. Donkeys. Donkey. We are donkeys. Mules. Did you know they’re cold-blooded? They freeze up when it gets cold.

Make a point here about recommenders that is augmenting our intelligence — AI, right? So recommenders are Netflix, Google Maps, lane control, braking control, the works. Sort of recommenders. They take input, form a pattern, predict the best move and give it to you. So they’re starting to become a great part of our life and we’re gonna become more and more dependent on them.

So part of this 360MEN — excuse me — part of this 360MEN platform is to build a corpus, a curated library by men for men.

Hey, while we were driving through that narrow road… as our lives are more integrated, are more infused or more augmented with this information on demand, the more we have to start becoming a bit aware of what it’s doing. So why are we on that little tiny country road? Because Google assumed — right, pattern-recognition assumed — that we wanted the most efficient route, that we wanted to go on the shortest path, not on a Sunday sort of stroll up on 281 through Marble Falls in order to find a flag, which I’ll tell you more in about a second. But it changed the route on us. We’re being told where to go by an algorithm and we’re following instructions.

You see, the part of 360MEN is to develop this corpus in order to help other guys learn how to navigate parts of their life and not have an AI takeover that doesn’t have any male input, doesn’t have a library to pull from.

All right, that’s kind of heady stuff, but let’s go in and see if Buc-ee’s got that flag for my son. Weeks ago at Canyon Lake I found this antler on the beach. Apparently that deer had dropped this. I asked my son if his grandson — my grandson — if anyway yes. My son David, if Ruben would like to have this screwed onto his door of his clubhouse. Indeed one was like yeah, send it in for a Texas flag.

So now we’re at Buc-ee’s and maybe they have it. Let’s go inside and see.

This discussion for just a moment — we’re going into Buc-ee’s. We just happened to see this but I want to give a shout out to Nathan and Marissa from Less Junk More Journey. For any of you that have an interest in a mobile lifestyle, they’re an excellent resource to learn about it and follow their journeys. We’ve subscribed to their YouTube channel and there’s a link below in the description so you can too. You can enjoy them and support them on Patreon. We appreciate that.

Learn a lot of hardships this way — trying to record edutainment on your cell phone with your brain doing two things at once and a cell phone with buttons all over it. It’s quite the deal.

So anyway, this is Buc-ee’s and they’re supposed to have everything in the world. So Angelina over here thinks that she wants to record this. Soup? I can’t see a thing. That’s hilarious. Reason you can’t find Texas flags anywhere but they got a Texas bandana and they have Texas bumper stickers so I guess that’s close enough. We’re gonna put that in the package and send that off today.

They’ve done a great job of branding and oh my gosh this place has got everything.

We just could not resist. There’s a lot of stuff in there to send out to all the grandkids. Yeah you got lost in the toy section. Yeah, all kinds of things. Texas this, that and the other thing. [Unclear banter about a pull toy and germs.] Yeah, it’s all good.

All right, so if you ever want to go to lose all your money and go to a Buc-ee’s, they got everything. As a come in for a single flag just be a few bucks and spend sixty bucks later. Everybody gets something.

All right, that’s the lesson from that one. What is that? A sausage burger? Daniel’s going for the Cobb salad.

We got the booty in the box. So some of the events of the day today: learning to reframe unwanted consequences, drop by a Buc-ee’s — that’s an experienced and dangerous place for your budget — and to consider as we embrace the benefits and conveniences of augmented intelligence how we have to give up our privacy to do so, whether it’s social media or recommenders or all the other tools. And there’s something to think about.
