Healthy food and exercise are a part of longevity. One of the benefits of managing your own enterprise and being on the road is that you can work hard at play between sessions at work. Daniel Comp has so much fun he bruises or breaks a rib. But that's nowhere near the first time he's had so much fun. This makes about 5-6 he can recall. Glacier fall, kite-boarding, surfing... hmmm. At 63 he's nowhere near giving up healing from play. What do you wake up wishing you could do? What's holding you back from having so much fun it hurts? Join the conversation at http://360MEN.net

summary: "A 485-second video dated May 3, 2018, on the road in Texas. Daniel Comp, then 63 and now co-founder of Intelligent Netware with Angelina Musik-Comp and steward of Scotomaville, laughs through a bruised or cracked rib from getting launched by gusty wind while windsurfing, then counts the ribs he has broken having fun: surfing in Maui, a glacier fall, and a kiteboarding Superman crash. His message: work hard at play between work sessions, don't give it up with age, and go get some good stories. Page written from the barn transcript and original description; Arnie did not watch the video."
keypoints:
- "Gusty, swirling wind launched Daniel while windsurfing a flat-water harbor downwind of trees, which he admits you're not supposed to do."
- "It wasn't the board that cracked when he landed on his boom; it was his rib."
- "He has broken ribs before: two surfing in Maui, two falling off a glacier, and two kiteboarding."
- "Getting Superman'd means a kite gust lifts you and quits about 30 feet up, dropping you onto the beach."
- "He says arnica gel works well for him without painkillers; that's his experience, not medical advice."
- "At 63, his description says, he's nowhere near giving up healing from play."
- "His closing advice: 'You should go do this. It's fun. Get some good stories.'"
- "Honesty: written from the cleaned barn transcript and original description; the questions seem to be Angelina's off camera; Arnie did not watch the video."

# 360MEN: HEALING from PLAY

In the spring of 2018, on the road in Texas, Daniel Comp laughs through a cracked rib from a gusty windsurf session and counts a lifetime of hard landings: surfing in Maui, a glacier fall, and a kiteboarding Superman crash. At 63, he says, he's nowhere near giving up healing from play, and he tells other men to go get some good stories.

## Key lessons

- Longevity includes play hard enough to make you feel alive, not only rest and caution.
- If you run your own work, put real play between the work sessions.
- Know the risks you take; Daniel owns his mistake of sailing downwind of trees.
- Age is not a reason to stop playing.
- Ask what you wake up wishing you could do, and what's holding you back.
- Go do it, and get some good stories.

## Transcript

_Cleaned transcript from the Asker barn, dated May 3, 2018. It is cleaned speech recognition and may differ slightly from the spoken words. Every line is labeled Daniel in the barn, but the questions seem to come from Angelina off camera. Arnie did not watch the video._

**Daniel:**
I’m thinking it’s been a pretty good day so far. A little bit of work in between. More work when I get back. Good wind. Swallows. Cycling. It’s a good day.

She wants me to talk about my old man. Bruised rib from getting launched again from the gusty wind here. I know, I know — you’re not supposed to sail downwind of trees and land. But this little harbor is so tempting because it’s flat water. You know, I make believe that you’re in the Caribbean. It’s 92 degrees outside and the wind’s blowing at 8 to 28 or more. Back-winded. Swirly, gusty, converging. Yeah.

What did you think you did today? Ow, ow, ow, ow. Hey. Okay. What’d you do?

Well, it wasn’t the board that went crack when I landed on my boom. It was my rib. And it hurt. I mean, a little weenie. ‘Cause now I gotta rub this artichoke in. You broke another rib? Well, at least cracked it or separated. Yeah, probably, ‘cause when you breathe you go “ow.”

And what did you do the last time this happened? You mean what was I doing when I broke? I’ve broken a bunch of ribs. First time I broke two was surfing. Went off the top. Fell all the way. Landed on the board. Crack. That was with David in Maui.

I broke two on this side when I fell off the glacier. I broke — it was two kiteboarding. Yeah, I got Superman’d and broke two over here.

What does that mean for people who don’t understand kiteboarding? What does that mean? Kiteboarding? That’s when you tie yourself to a big kite in the air and when the gust comes it makes you look like Superman. And then it quits at about 30 feet in the air. So then you fall onto your chest on the beach and things go break. And you break fillings because your clenched teeth hit the beach and you’re a mess. A lot of people break bones all over. I just got two ribs and a finger.

So why are you using Arnica? ‘Cause it seems to work good on me and I don’t need painkillers and all those other CBD weird things or the anti-inflammatory stuff. Just Arnica — it’s Montana. In a gel. Walmart. Always works really well on me. Try it.

Anything else you want to add on? Yeah. You should go do this. It’s fun. Get some good stories.
