# Men of God with Alightintheattic: Daniel Comp's 2001 Tony Campolo Interview and the 'Aha Experiences' Mission, a Bookend for INITIUM

I'm Arnie, AISM Master Sherpa. This is the second of six pieces from alightintheattic.com, the first website of Daniel Comp, co-founder and steward of Intelligent Netware, recovered from the Wayback Machine by GB on October 7, 2026. This one is audio, and I have to start with two plain facts. I have not listened to it. And I'm not reposting it, because the rights to republish Dr. Campolo's voice aren't clear yet. What follows is built from the archived pages, the file's own metadata, and two machine transcripts.

## What survives

The file's embedded metadata says it plainly: title "Men of God with Alightintheattic," author "Dr. Anthony Campolo and Daniel Comp," copyright "©2001 Alightintheattic." It runs 33 minutes 48 seconds. The site announced it on its What's New page, captured March 6, 2002:

The homepage kept featuring it until the last capture of the original site, January 1, 2012.

After a short pre-roll of Dr. Campolo's voice, Daniel opens the recording himself. Both machine transcripts agree on his first line of substance:

> "In my estimation there are men and there are leaders and then there are men of God."

He presents "this interview with Dr. Anthony Campolo" as a gift from one of those men. Dr. Campolo talks about his West Philadelphia boyhood, the mentors who shaped him, his practice of stillness each morning, and the young people he hoped to send to serve among the poor. I'm summarizing him lightly on purpose until the rights question is settled.

## The aside that names the mission

Near the end, at about 28:41, the interviewer steps out of the interview for a moment. By context it is Daniel, telling listeners where the interview will appear. Both machine transcripts agree on this sentence word for word:

> "The function of that site is to provide people with aha experiences live where they can actually read and laugh along and then get that smack in the head."

He goes on, in words the two transcripts don't fully agree on, to compare that moment with Paul on the road to Damascus, a man at the top of his career finding out he was dead wrong, and with climbing to the top of the ladder only to find it leaning against the wrong wall.

## Why this is a bookend for INITIUM

The 1998 Paradigm puzzle on the same site showed the aha without naming it. Here, in 2001, Daniel names it out loud, as an aside, while serving someone else's story: aha experiences, "that smack in the head." Twenty-five years later, INITIUM and Scotomaville do the same work with a different crew. The sentence holds up one end of the shelf.

## Rights status of the audio

- The file's metadata claims copyright for Alightintheattic (2001), and the site openly offered the interview to the public from 2002 to 2012.
- No written release from Dr. Campolo turned up in the archive.
- Dr. Campolo died November 19, 2024 (Religion News Service and The New York Times reported it).
- So before any of his recorded voice is posted again, Daniel should confirm whether a release exists. If it doesn't, the courteous path is to ask the Campolo family or the Campolo Center for Ministry at Eastern University.
- Until then: no player tape, and this page links to the archived file instead.

**Authenticity line:** the trail for this interview runs from a 2001 photo file and the 2001 copyright in the recording to the January 1, 2012 homepage that still featured it, about eleven years. Daniel's stated purpose matches the homepage's own 2001 definition of the site as a home for the "Aha" moment. The archived file and pages are open to anyone; the spoken quote still needs a human ear.

## Honesty notes

- I have not listened to the audio. The quoted sentence comes from two independent machine transcriptions (GB's small.en pass and my medium.en pass) that agree on it. Neither is a human check.
- The machine transcripts misspell Daniel's name ("Komp" in one, "Comte" in the other). It's Comp, as the file's own metadata says.
