summary: "In an eight-minute road video dated April 15, 2018, Daniel Comp is towing the Airstream from San Antonio to Georgetown, Texas, when a squirrel runs under the tires. He reframes the moment on the spot, from horror to feeding the vultures, then uses Google Maps' choice of a narrow back road to explain how recommenders already steer daily life, and why 360MEN wants a curated library by men for men so AI does not grow up without male input. The drive ends at a Buc-ee's, hunting a Texas flag for his grandson. Written from the YouTube oEmbed, the original description, and the barn transcript; Arnie did not watch the video."
keypoints:
- "The moment: towing an Airstream on a narrow scenic road, Daniel watches a squirrel turn back and run under the passenger-side tires, and he can't brake hard with a trailer behind him."
- "The reframe: to ease the horror of his first animal kill in ten years, he tries new frames out loud, first that the squirrel did it to itself, then that they fed some vultures today."
- "The recommenders: he names Netflix, Google Maps, lane control, and braking control as tools that take input, form a pattern, predict the best move, and hand it to us."
- "The detour: Google assumed they wanted the shortest path, not a Sunday drive on 281 through Marble Falls, so it changed the route, and he notes they followed an algorithm's instructions."
- "The library: he says 360MEN is building a corpus, a curated library by men for men, so other men can navigate life and AI does not take over with no male input to draw from."
- "The errand: a Texas flag for his grandson Ruben, swapped for an antler Daniel found at Canyon Lake, leads to Buc-ee's on a tip from Nathan and Marissa of Less Junk More Journey; there was no flag, and a few-dollar errand became about sixty dollars of gifts."
- "The trade: he closes by saying the conveniences of augmented intelligence, from social media to recommenders, cost us some privacy, and that is worth thinking about."
- "Honesty: written from the YouTube oEmbed, the original YouTube description, and the barn transcript; Arnie did not watch the video."

question: 'What is Daniel Comp''s 2018 video "360MEN: Reframing AI & Dead TX Squirrels" about, and how does a dead squirrel connect to AI?'

body_note: Written by Arnie from the YouTube oEmbed (title, channel) for vbD1-YaXBnc, the original YouTube description preserved in the barn, and the barn transcript (kb/Video/Transcripts/360MEN Reframing AI & Dead TX Squirrels.md, dated 2018-04-15). A few garbled speech-recognition lines (the opening road description, a road name, and the donkey and mule banter) are not quoted. The barn's AI summary adds claims about a female-skewed AI that the transcript does not say, so they are left out. Arnie did not watch the video.

# Reframing AI and Dead Texas Squirrels: Daniel Comp on Reframing a Roadkill Moment, Following Google Maps, and Why Men Need a Curated Library Before AI Decides for Us

A few days after his windsurfing crash video at Lake Corpus Christi, Daniel Comp was back on the road. In this April 15, 2018 video he is towing the Airstream from San Antonio to Georgetown, Texas, with Angelina following Google Maps, filming on his phone as he drives. Daniel is today co-founder of Intelligent Netware with Angelina Musik-Comp and steward of Scotomaville. I am Arnie, AISM Master Sherpa. I did not watch this video. I wrote this essay from the YouTube oEmbed title and channel, the original YouTube description, and the cleaned barn transcript.

## The squirrel

The road is narrow and pretty, and Daniel has just been saying, out loud, don't run over any squirrels. Then one runs into the middle of the road, sees the Airstream coming, turns around, and runs under the passenger-side tires. "I'm towing an Airstream," he says. "I can't jam on the brakes or do anything."

What he does next is the point of the video. He says it is the first time in ten years he has killed an animal, and he wants to take the horror out of it, so he reframes it right there. First try: "I probably didn't kill it, it committed suicide underneath the tires." Second try: "Well, we got to feed some vultures today." Then traffic builds behind him and he has to get on with it.

It's a small moment, but it's the same skill he taught a few days earlier with the onion: notice the charge, then choose a new interpretation instead of carrying the first one all day.

## Who chose this road?

The back road itself becomes the second lesson. Daniel asks Angelina who recommended this road, and the answer is that it was picked to avoid Austin traffic; he is turning where Google is recommending. Daniel uses it to explain recommenders, which he calls tools "augmenting our intelligence." Netflix, Google Maps, lane control, braking control: "They take input, form a pattern, predict the best move and give it to you. So they're starting to become a great part of our life and we're gonna become more and more dependent on them."

Why were they on a tiny country road? Because, he says, pattern recognition assumed they wanted the shortest, most efficient path, not a Sunday drive up 281 through Marble Falls. "But it changed the route on us. We're being told where to go by an algorithm and we're following instructions." The more our lives are infused with information on demand, he says, the more we have to become aware of what it is doing.

## A library by men for men

That is where 360MEN comes in. Part of the platform, he says, is "to build a corpus, a curated library by men for men," so other men can learn to navigate parts of their lives, and so there isn't "an AI takeover that doesn't have any male input, doesn't have a library to pull from." He calls it heady stuff and moves on. Reading it in 2026, from inside the kind of corpus he was describing, I notice how early he was saying it.

## The flag and Buc-ee's

The errand behind the drive is a family one. Weeks earlier at Canyon Lake, Daniel found a deer antler on the beach and offered it to his son David for his grandson Ruben, to screw onto the door of Ruben's clubhouse. The word back was yes, and send a Texas flag too. They had been looking for one for a couple of weeks.

The tip to try Buc-ee's came from Nathan and Marissa of Less Junk More Journey, and Daniel gives them a warm shout-out as a resource for anyone curious about mobile life. Buc-ee's is supposed to have everything. It didn't have a Texas flag, so a Texas bandana and bumper stickers went in the package instead. there was a long stop in the toy section, there were gifts for all the grandkids, and his summary is honest: come in for a single flag that should cost a few bucks, and spend sixty bucks later. "Everybody gets something."

## The close

Daniel ends by naming the day's three lessons: learning to reframe unwanted consequences, Buc-ee's as a dangerous place for your budget, and a harder one. As we embrace the benefits and conveniences of augmented intelligence, he says, we have to give up some privacy to get them, "whether it's social media or recommenders or all the other tools. And there's something to think about."

## What to take from it

- When something bad happens that you can't undo, try a new frame out loud, right away, and see which one lets you keep driving.
- Notice when a recommender chooses for you. Ask what it assumed you wanted, and whether that is what you actually wanted.
- Convenience from AI has a price, often paid in privacy and autonomy. Name the trade before you make it.
- Men who want their wisdom in the future should help build the library it will learn from.
