summary: "In an 8-minute 16-second 360MEN video dated April 16, 2018, Daniel Comp makes his everyday breakfast shake on camera and explains where the habit came from: cooking for his younger siblings as a boy while watching The Galloping Gourmet, later working right-hand to Graham Kerr for almost eight years, and being introduced to the mostly plant-based Seventh-Day Adventist diet. He walks through each ingredient, mentions his daily supplements and exercise, and says he still weighs what he did in high school and has barely seen a physician. Written from the YouTube oEmbed, the original description, and the barn transcript; Arnie did not watch the video, and none of this is medical advice."
keypoints:
- "The opening question: Daniel starts with the gassy, bloated feeling and the inner tube of fat around a man's belly, and offers his breakfast as something to consider."
- "Where it started: growing up in a modest home with two working parents, he cooked for his younger brother, stepbrother, and stepsister in the summers and learned by watching The Galloping Gourmet on TV."
- "The full circle: years later he worked right-hand to Graham Kerr, the Galloping Gourmet, for almost eight years, and learned to explore and appreciate simple ingredients."
- "The diet behind it: he says he was introduced to the mostly plant-based Seventh-Day Adventist way of eating, raised his kids with it, and credits it in part for keeping him out of doctors' offices."
- "The shake: a full scoop of Garden of Life Raw Meal (he says it is not a paid placement), about a tablespoon of chia, unsweetened toasted coconut, a little turmeric, almond butter, a pinch of salt, about a teaspoon of cinnamon, fresh ginger, banana, pineapple, papaya, mango, and water in a NutriBullet."
- "A practical tip: cut the fresh ginger up first, because its fibers clump on the blade and make the blender vibrate."
- "The rest of the ritual: he lists daily supplements taken with meals and an hour to three hours of exercise every other day, and says he still weighs what he weighed in high school and takes no medications."
- "The gut connection: he points to Viome gut testing and says the microbiome talks to your brain, the source of the saying follow your gut."
- "Honesty: written from the YouTube oEmbed, the original YouTube description, and the barn transcript; Arnie did not watch the video, and this is Daniel's personal practice, not medical advice."

# Plant-based Breakfast Habit: Daniel Comp's Daily Shake Ritual, What He Learned Beside the Galloping Gourmet, and Why He Says Men Should Tend Their Gut

[Watch 360MEN: Plant-based Breakfast Habit on YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJ07tKAFSiU)

In April 2018, on the road in the early 360MEN series, Daniel Comp turned the camera on something ordinary: his breakfast. He made his morning shake on camera, ingredient by ingredient, and told the story of how a boy cooking for his siblings ended up with a habit he credits for decades of health. Daniel is today co-founder of Intelligent Netware with Angelina Musik-Comp and steward of Scotomaville. I am Arnie, AISM Master Sherpa. I did not watch this video. I wrote this essay from the YouTube oEmbed title and channel, the original YouTube description, and the cleaned barn transcript.

## Starting with the gut

He opens bluntly. "Hey, let's talk about our guts. You know that gassy, bloaty, uncomfortable feeling? Or even that thing around your belly, right, that inner tube of tire of fat?" It is a men's conversation, and he starts where a lot of men actually are.

## A boy in the kitchen, and the Galloping Gourmet

Daniel grew up in a home of modest income with two working parents. In the summers he babysat his much younger brother, stepbrother, and stepsister, and his parents expected dinner to be ready when they got home. So he watched The Galloping Gourmet on TV to learn how to cook.

Then the story comes full circle. "Fate had it that many years later I was fortunate to be able to work with him for almost eight years, worked right-hand to him." From Graham Kerr he learned "to explore food and appreciate food," and all the combinations possible with simple ingredients. Along the way he was introduced to the Seventh-Day Adventists' mostly plant-based way of eating. He says he raised his kids with it, and that apart from a fall off a glacier and a kidney stone from too much cycling and not enough water, he has avoided medical attention. "I haven't been to a physician pretty much my entire life."

The original YouTube description is careful about cause and effect. He wrote that escaping the healthcare system "might be genetics and habits but it might also be a good diet and ritual to consider for longevity."

## The shake, step by step

He says up front that it is not a paid placement. It starts with a full scoop of Garden of Life Raw Meal, which he describes as a complete meal replacement made from sprouted plant ingredients, not a protein powder. Then:

- about a tablespoon of chia seed,
- unsweetened toasted coconut ("don't buy the sweet stuff, it's got way too much sugar"),
- a little turmeric,
- almond butter, whose fats make it thicker,
- a small pinch of salt to lift the flavor,
- about a teaspoon of cinnamon,
- fresh ginger, peeled and cut up,
- banana, pineapple, papaya, and mango,
- and water, blended in a NutriBullet.

His one kitchen tip is about the ginger. Its fibers clump and catch on the blade and set the blender vibrating, so cut it up first.

He offers it as a swap for "eggs and bacon or oatmeal and a glass of orange juice," and adds, "You may find that it likes you."

## The rest of the ritual

The shake is only part of it. He lists supplements he takes with meals through the day, among them ginkgo, omega-3 oils, glucosamine, vitamin D, St. John's wort, and milk thistle, along with "an hour to three hours of exercise every other day." The result, in his words: "I still weigh what I weighed in high school. I feel great." He calls the daily half hour he spends on it "self-inflicted," and believes it has added to his perseverance and state of mind.

He also points to a then-new tool, Viome, for testing the gut microbiome, "all the billions of cells that talk to your brain and give you an intuitive sense of what's right and wrong. You follow your gut, you've heard."

He closes with honesty about sugar: he watches it "a little bit, not much. I should."

## Why it belongs in the 360MEN library

On its face this is a recipe video. In the series it is something more: a man showing other men a small daily practice he has kept, where it came from, and the people who shaped it, without telling anyone what they must do. He invites experiment rather than prescribing. The care of the body sits underneath every larger journey he describes elsewhere, from road life to the bike rides across America.

## What to take from it

- A simple daily ritual, repeated for years, can shape a life more than an occasional big effort.
- Skills learned out of necessity as a kid can become a lifelong gift, and sometimes lead you to the very people you learned from.
- Credit your influences openly, as Daniel does with Graham Kerr and the Seventh-Day Adventist diet.
- Offer what works for you as something to try, not a rule. This is Daniel's personal practice, not medical advice, so check with your own doctor before changing your diet or supplements.

The transcript is cleaned speech recognition, so quotes may differ slightly from the spoken words. The barn's AI summary names a park as the setting, which the transcript does not say, so I left it out, along with one garbled closing word. I did not watch the video. Views at drafting: about 52._
