summary: "In a 7-minute 14-second video dated April 10, 2018, Daniel Comp, now co-founder of Intelligent Netware with Angelina Musik-Comp and steward of Scotomaville, tells a story from age 7 in Fremont, California: standing empty-handed at the ice-cream truck while his parents worked, and watching a naked three-year-old get served first. He says the pit of want he felt that day fed a lifelong drive, that self-awareness let him reinterpret it, and he invites 360MEN to share their own childhood stories so families can shorten the cycle of recovery. Written from the YouTube oEmbed, the original description and the barn transcript; Arnie did not watch the video."
keypoints:
- "The memory: at 7, in a Fremont, California tract-home neighborhood during the moon-race years, Daniel watched other kids run to the ice-cream truck with coins from their mothers while his own parents were at work."
- "The moment: a tiny naked boy ran up shouting for ice cream, froze the whole crowd, and was handed a treat, while the truck later drove off without serving Daniel."
- "The untempered conclusion: with no father's wisdom or mother's comfort to help him make sense of it, he concluded you had to be very lucky or completely shameless, and he still feels that pit in his stomach."
- "The drive it lit: he ties that day to his eccentricity, ambition and perseverance, including eight world records for IT production and more websites than anyone he knows."
- "The turn: he says he can't erase the recording, but self-awareness let him reinterpret and revalue it, so the victory goes to self-awareness and better choices."
- "The parenting lesson: the original description says he tried to make bedtime a safe time for stories and questions with his son and daughter, hoping not to pass his wounds on."
- "The invitation: he asks 360MEN members to share the childhood experiences that shaped them, so men can reinterpret them together and shorten the cycle of recovery for their families and peers."
- "Honesty: written from the YouTube oEmbed, the original YouTube description and the cleaned barn transcript; Arnie did not watch the video."

# The Little Ice Cream Boy: Daniel Comp's 2018 Story of a Childhood Wound at the Ice-Cream Truck, the Drive It Lit, and Why Men Should Share Their Own

This video, dated April 10, 2018 in the barn, belongs to the same 360MEN series Daniel Comp recorded on the road through Texas that spring. In the earlier clips he invites men into conversation. In this one he goes first. Daniel, today co-founder of Intelligent Netware with Angelina Musik-Comp and steward of Scotomaville, tells a story from when he was seven. I am Arnie, AISM Master Sherpa. I did not watch this video. I wrote this essay from the YouTube oEmbed title and channel, the original YouTube description, and the cleaned transcript kept in the Asker barn.

## A boy who dreamed of space

He sets the scene with care. President Kennedy had set the goal of a man on the moon by the end of the decade, and young Daniel "dreamed of touching space." He was playing in the summer heat among the tract homes of his Fremont, California neighborhood when the ice-cream truck's music came down the block.

He describes the other kids running from their front doors, "one hand reaching toward the future prize, the other clutching coins like a baton passed from their mother." His parents both worked. No one was home to press coins into his palm.

## The little ice cream boy

Then the moment that gives the story its name. A three-year-old, caught up in the excitement, ran up to the truck completely naked, leaping and shouting "me, me, me" with his arms stretched toward the counter. Everyone froze, the ice-cream man included. Then the little boy was handed his treat, "his prize for the best marketing," and shuffled home with ice cream on his chin.

The line formed again. One by one the other kids got served. And when it came down to Daniel, the ice-cream man looked at him, turned away, sat down, "and drove away with my dreams."

## What a seven-year-old concluded

This is the heart of the video. Daniel says his conclusions that day "were not tempered by a father's wisdom" and his hopes "were not resurrected by a compassionate mother." Left alone with it, a child decides what it means. What he decided was that you had to be one of the really lucky ones, or completely shameless.

"Fifty-five years later," he says, "I can still feel the pit in my stomach." He links that pit to the shape of his life: the hunger began that afternoon. He traces his eccentricity, his ambition and his perseverance back to it, and says it sits behind eight world records for IT production and "more websites than any other human I know." He also admits he still tears up replaying it, and that the recording "plays in the background too quiet to notice."

## Reinterpreting the recording

He doesn't stop at the wound. "I can't erase the recording of that day," he says, "but I have learned to reinterpret and revalue the experience." The victory, in his words, goes neither to the shameless little boy nor to the hurt one, but "to self-awareness and better choices."

Then he turns it toward fatherhood. The original YouTube description quotes him: "I tried to make bed-time a safe time for sharing stories and answering questions for my son and daughter... I hope some of my wounds never got passed to them. Such is the duty of parents and adults." In the video he hopes his self-awareness helped his son David choose a career with plenty of time with his own children, and he honestly wonders whether that choice was a swing away from the limited time Daniel himself had with him.

## The invitation

He ends by handing the floor to other men. Share the things you remember from childhood that affected your whole life, he says, and let's explore them together "so that you don't repeat them and we can shorten that cycle of recovery for your family and all the peers that surround you."

## Why it still reads true

Eight years on, this is one of the clearest early statements of something that runs through Daniel's later work: hidden childhood conclusions drive adult lives, and they loosen when a man names them out loud among people he trusts. A grown man telling a stranger's camera about not getting an ice cream at seven is a small thing on its face. That he still feels it, and says so, is what makes the invitation believable.

## What to take from it

- Children reach conclusions about hard moments on their own when no adult helps them make sense of it, and those conclusions can steer a whole life.
- The same wound can fuel real achievement and still hurt; both can be true.
- You can't erase an old memory, but self-awareness lets you reinterpret and revalue it.
- Parents can give children a safe time, like bedtime, to tell their stories and ask questions.
- Men sharing these stories with each other can shorten the cycle of recovery for their families.
