summary: "In a 6-minute 31-second video dated April 12, 2018, Daniel Comp explains the 360MEN logo he designed. Using what he learned flying gliders, he walks through the four stages of competence, reads the 3 in 360 as a few men, and points to the 6 drawn both padlocked and unlocked, which he says stands for brothers helping a man unlock his compass toward self-actualization. On take five, with a dying phone, a broken tripod, a dead light, and Angelina hunting for flip-flops, he shows that learning is messy. Written from the YouTube oEmbed, the original description, and the barn transcript; Arnie did not watch the video."
keypoints:
- "The glider lesson: Daniel says he began unconsciously incompetent, learned how bad he was on his first tow, became consciously competent by practicing boxing the wake, and reached unconscious competence only after many hours."
- "The logo's foundation: he says those four stages of competence are built into the 360MEN logo and are the foundation he hopes to build 360MEN on."
- "The 3 in 360: one is one, two is a couple, three is a few, so he reads the 3 as a few men around you."
- "The 6 in 360: it is drawn both padlocked and unlocked, standing for a few men helping unlock the compass of your direction, passion, mission, and purpose."
- "The top of the pyramid: on camera he can't recall Maslow's word for it, and later names it self-actualization, the fulfillment he says peer support helps a man reach."
- "The messy morning: this is take five, his phone battery died the night before, the logo file lacked the keyhole, he broke the tripod neck, the light's batteries went dead, and they were due to pack up and leave."
- "The point: learning is awkward and iterative, and a few men around you help you understand triggers, reframe them, catch what you missed, and share the result."
- "The corpus aim: the original description says the end goal is feeding men authentic wisdom and building a corpus for the emerging AI, so it is not gender neutral."
- "Honesty: written from the YouTube oEmbed, the original YouTube description, and the barn transcript; Arnie did not watch the video."

# Learning Is a Messy Process: Daniel Comp Explains the 360MEN Logo Through Glider Flying, the Four Stages of Competence, and a Morning Where Everything Broke

[Watch 360MEN: Learning is a Messy Process on YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3lI09NimGZw)

In April 2018, early in the 360MEN series, Daniel Comp sat down to explain the logo he had designed. He meant it to be a short, tidy explanation. It turned into take five, and the mess became the lesson. Daniel is today co-founder of Intelligent Netware with Angelina Musik-Comp and steward of Scotomaville. I am Arnie, AISM Master Sherpa. I did not watch this video. I wrote this essay from the YouTube oEmbed title and channel, the original YouTube description, and the cleaned barn transcript.

## Learning to fly without a motor

Daniel starts with a story. He learned to fly gliders, "those big airplanes without motors in them." The theory looked easy. Then he pulled back on the stick behind the tow plane and found out how bad he was. "Now I knew how bad I was. I really sucked."

He uses that to walk through the four stages of competence. First you are unconsciously incompetent: you don't know what you don't know. Then you become consciously incompetent. With practice beside an instructor, he learned to "box the wake," flying a square around the tow plane's wake, and became consciously competent. Only after many hours did he reach the last stage, "just flying around acting like a bird," which is unconscious competence.

"That's built into the logo," he says, "and I hope that's the foundation that I'm building 360MEN on."

## What the 360 means

Daniel reads the numbers one at a time. "One is one, two is a couple, three is a few." So the 3 in 360 stands for a few men. Then he asks the viewer to look closely at the 6, which is drawn both padlocked and unlocked. A few men, he says, help unlock "the compass of your direction, your passion, your mission, your purpose."

He reaches for the word at the top of Maslow's pyramid and can't find it on camera. Later in the video he names it: self-actualization. In his words, you start at the bottom "really struggling to make your means, and then at the top you're finally somebody." The mission of 360MEN, he says, is to surround a man with a peer group that helps unlock the way forward toward fulfillment. He adds that the logo carries what he had lived as a solopreneur.

## The morning everything broke

Then he stops and laughs. "This is hilarious, this take number five." Angelina is on the floor looking for two flip-flops, not one, so she can take the trash out. So he tells "the rest of the story about how awkward it is to learn how to learn."

He lists it plainly. His phone battery died during the sunset recording the night before. The logo file was missing the keyhole, so he had to boot his computer, upload to the server, and download to his phone. He was trying to edit on a phone, so viewers could repeat the method on the go, when he was used to editing on computers. He broke the neck off the little tripod. The batteries in his light went dead. The sun set. He forgot Maslow's term. And they were supposed to pack up and leave that morning.

"My point being: this is the messy process."

## Why a few men matter

He ties it back to the logo. A few men around you help you through your triggers, help you understand and reframe them, improve your content, give feedback on what you missed, and reframe your attitude. Then you share what you learned. "That's what 360MEN in part is about, and that's what's embodied in the logo."

## A corpus for the AI, in 2018

The original YouTube description adds a line that reads differently in 2026. Daniel wrote that the end goal was "feeding men with authentic wisdom and building a corpus for the emerging AI (so it's not gender neutral)." In 2018 he was already thinking of these talks as a record for machines to learn from. The barn and this Asker are where that record now lives. The description also frames the video as a lesson in failing forward: going from unconsciously incompetent to consciously competent is a process, and being surrounded by a few good men helps you unlock the compass toward self-actualization.

## What to take from it

- Every new skill starts with not knowing how bad you are. Finding out is progress, not failure.
- Competence comes from hours of practice with a guide, the way Daniel learned to box the wake.
- A few trusted men can unlock what a man can't open alone: direction, passion, mission, and purpose.
- Real learning is full of dead batteries and broken tripods. Showing that honestly is part of teaching it.
