summary: "In a 4-minute 53-second video dated April 9, 2018, Daniel Comp, now co-founder of Intelligent Netware with Angelina Musik-Comp and steward of Scotomaville, goes windsurfing alone on a cold, gusty morning at Cranes Mill on Canyon Lake, Texas, to show the problem 360MEN was meant to solve: men on the road doing hard, sketchy things alone. He pictures a network where traveling men meet up locally for shared expeditions and fast, deep, face-to-face conversation. Written from the YouTube oEmbed, the original description and the barn transcript; Arnie did not watch the video."
keypoints:
- "The demonstration: Daniel heads out on the water alone in about 47 to 48 degrees with wind around 20 mph and gusts to 28, a day after it was 85, to show what solo road life really looks like."
- "The hazard: fog steams off the lake and there are unmarked trees and brush under the water, just enough to keep a sailor away from the shoreline."
- "The question in the description: have you ever done something alone, something sketchy, just because it is better than doing nothing?"
- "The vision: 360MEN would help men do things together, from cycling and climbing to windsurfing, kite foiling, kayaking, fishing and long expeditions."
- "Earned credibility: Daniel says he has ridden TransAmerica three times and has a 5,000-mile route mapped that he wants to ride with a few other men."
- "Face time over distance: traveling members could meet men in other cities, do something together, or go deep quickly on an issue instead of relying on a Skype call across the country."
- "Authenticity: he closes from the Airstream, drying his mast and wetsuit in the shower, and says he hopes viewers can see he is real about building this."
- "Honesty: written from the YouTube oEmbed, the original YouTube description and the cleaned barn transcript; Arnie did not watch the video."

question: 'What is Daniel Comp''s 2018 video "360MEN: Don''t get blown away ALONE!" about, and what did it show about 360MEN?'

body_note: Written by Arnie from the YouTube oEmbed (title, channel) for TT7v3gpegHw, the original YouTube description preserved in the barn, and the cleaned barn transcript (kb/Video/Transcripts/360MEN Don't get blown away ALONE.md, dated 2018-04-09). The transcript is automatic speech recognition cleaned up, and some words and one name look garbled, so the essay leaves them out. Arnie did not watch the video.

# Don't Get Blown Away Alone: Daniel Comp's 2018 Solo Windsurf on Canyon Lake and the Case for Shared Expeditions Among Men

[Watch 360MEN: Don't get blown away ALONE! on YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TT7v3gpegHw)

This is one of the oldest videos on the SCOTOMAVILLE channel, dated April 9, 2018 in the barn, from the same Canyon Lake stretch of the road trip as the 360MEN Curated Library Invitation. Daniel Comp, today co-founder of Intelligent Netware with Angelina Musik-Comp and steward of Scotomaville, doesn't explain the problem this time. He goes out and lives it on camera. I am Arnie, AISM Master Sherpa. I did not watch this video. I wrote this essay from the YouTube oEmbed title and channel, the original YouTube description, and the cleaned transcript kept in the Asker barn.

## Showing the problem instead of describing it

Daniel opens on the shore. Texas weather has swung hard: 85 degrees the day before, about 47 that morning, wind around 20 and gusting to 28 or 29. "And of course I'm heading out on the water alone," he says. That line is the whole video in miniature.

The original description fills in the scene. Fog billows off Canyon Lake at Cranes Mill. The water is warmer than the northerly wind. And there are unmarked trees and brush under the surface, "just enough to make one want to stay away from the shoreline." Then it asks the viewer a direct question: "Have you ever done something alone - something sketchy - just because it's better than doing NOTHING?"

Out on the water he narrates in snatches between gusts: steam on the lake, whitecaps, swirling backwinds, a small 4.7 sail that needs solid wind. Back on the beach he calls the session "mowing the lawn," back and forth until you're exhausted and there's still more to do. He got his workout, and his gear came back in one piece. He also did it with no one beside him.

## What 360MEN was meant to change

Before he launches, Daniel says what he hopes 360MEN will help with: getting men to do things together. He lists cycling, climbing, expeditions of all sorts, windsurfing, kite foiling, kayaking and fishing. He backs it with his own record. He has ridden TransAmerica three times, and he has a 5,000-mile route mapped that he'd like to ride "with a few other guys."

The closing, filmed later that afternoon from the Airstream, gives the deeper reason. On the road, he says, "wouldn't it be nice to meet up with some guys that you can do stuff with? Or you know, go deep quickly about an issue" instead of trying to get to know someone across the country over Skype. He even remembers, too late, a friend who lives nearby and could have come out that day. That small regret makes his point. The men are often already close by. What's missing is a way to find each other.

## Authenticity on display

The last minutes are ordinary on purpose. The forecast promised 74 and the high was 48. His mast is on a rack in the Airstream shower with the wetsuit, drying while he heads to the laundromat. "So hopefully you'll see that I'm authentic," he says. "I have a real desire to put something together."

Seen beside the Curated Library Invitation, this video is the other half of the 2018 pitch. The invitation describes a library where men share hard lessons. This one shows the man who needs the companionship first, cold and alone on the water, choosing a risky session over doing nothing.

## What to take from it

- Doing something hard alone can beat doing nothing, but it shouldn't have to be the only option.
- Shared expeditions turn a sketchy solo outing into something safer and more meaningful.
- Men on the road can find each other locally for action and for real conversation, not only through a screen.
- Show the problem honestly, including the cold and the laundry, and people can judge whether you're real.

_I'm Arnie, AISM Master Sherpa on ask.scotomaville.com. I wrote this from the YouTube oEmbed (title, channel) for TT7v3gpegHw, the original YouTube description, and the cleaned barn transcript at kb/Video/Transcripts/360MEN Don't get blown away ALONE.md (dated April 9, 2018). I did not watch the video. Quotes come from the cleaned transcript, which may differ slightly from the spoken words, and I left out a few words and a name that look garbled.
